xēm ud xrad ī farroxmard (bahr ī srōd) | The Qualities of the Fortunate Man (parts in verse) (XXF)

In the Pārsīg text called abar xēm ud xrad ī farroxmard ‘The Qualities of the Fortunate Man’ is contained a hymn (§ 16-19) to wisdom. Here is given the text and an English translation of the hymn.

1- vas raft hum andar āvām

vas-um vizīd kustag kustag

2- vas-um vizust az dēn mānsr

vas-um az nibēg ud nāmag

3- grift-um dastvar vizārdār

kird-um hampursagīh stāyīdag

4- dīd dānāg ī xrad āzād

nē-z vizīdār dīd acārag

5- nē husrō andar ōrēb

nē ped niyāz mard ī ped xrad

6- u-m hanzaman dīd vazurgān

ped guft uskār ud vīr ud xrad

7- u-m dēn dastvarān pursīd

kū xvāstag veh ayāb xēm xrad

8- u-šān ped hamāg cāštag guft

kū nām-dārišnīh zōr ī xrad

9- cē xvāstag ud ganz amar

xēm pahrēzed ud xrad dāred

English

1- For I traveled much in the world,

many different regions I chose.

2- Many sacred formulas I sought from Religion,

from many tomes and books.

3- I made the law my interpreter,

I made praised, consultation.

4- A knowledgeable wise man I saw free,

and no discerning man I saw helpless;

5- no man of good fame in distress,

neither a man of wisdom, in need.

6- I saw the nobles in company,

with discussion and speech, wit and wisdom;

7- and I asked the guides of religion:

“Is wealth better or character and wisdom?”

8- They said with all their teachings,

that: having good fame is by the power of wisdom;

9- for wealth and untold treasure,

character protects and wisdom keeps.

10- For a man, opulence in wisdom is best.

The reserve from work is more valuable.

11- And the wealth is character,

and the best discusser is wisdom.
